If you know me at all, you know I love creating art that revolves around flowers. This March I will be focusing on the lily flower.

Much to my surprise, the image of the lily has been used for quite some time. Depictions of lilies, which date as far back as 1580 B.C., have been discovered in a villa in Crete. The lily flower has long played a role in ancient mythology. The word lily is derived from the Greek word “leiron”.   The Greeks  believed it sprouted from the milk of Hera, the queen of the gods.

The lily flower, in it’s many forms, has been given quite a few meanings including: the Virgin Mary’s purity (white Madonna  Lily), friendship, devotion, sympathy, wealth, prosperity, and humility.

Over the past year I have been trying to branch out and try new things. Colored lines, instead of black ones, are quickly becoming one of my favorite techniques. A few weeks ago I got a request from a client for a tattoo with no lines. Not only did this client want a “line-less” tattoo, but she wanted the tattoo to look like the subject matter was sort of  “painted” on her.

I happily took her request because she wanted flowers. Echinacea flowers, to be exact! I was super excited! After a bit of research I drew her up a sketch and she loved it, so we moved onto the tattooing. Here is what I created for her.

In the end I really enjoyed doing this piece calf piece and my client was very happy with the end result. She’s now walking around  with her own bouquet of echinacea flowers!

It’s my job to reach into your noggin and pull out your tattoo dream. When I’m brought a drawing to work with, I usually have my work cut out for me. No matter how perfect the drawing I’m presented is, there are still things I have to do to it before it can be tattooed. Some times, detail has to be taken out do to size constraints. Other times, lines have to be cleaned up and straightened. There are also cases where I have to take a client’s drawing, and morph it into a composition that is more complimenting to the spot on the body that’s getting tattooed.

The most recent drawing that was  given to me was of  a Dia De Los Muertos  inspired gypsy head.  A  very nice girl named Vanessa gave me her drawing, which I  spruced up  and brought to life for her.

Vanessa ended up getting the tattoo on her right deltoid a week or so later. I have to say it was a super fun tattoo to do and Vanessa sat like a champ! Here’s the finished product:

This piece is just one of many tattoos she wants and the beginning of her sleeve! Needless to say, I’m very excited to see where this is going and I look forward to working with her in the future!

I know you’re all excited to see the second product of February’s tattoo special. As you may remember from last week, I told you all that two smart girls jumped on the killer deal I was offering last month. Last week you got to see what the first girl got tattooed. A cluster of magenta orchids. This week, I present to you, the tattoo I did for the second lucky woman!

This was such a fun tattoo to create! All of the lines are different shades of green and purple. Though this technique requires lots of ink changing and patience, the end result is well worth it. At least, in my humble opinion. I added splashes of red, orange, and yellow behind the fully blossomed orchid and buds, to help them stand out from the skin tone. The tattoo sits on top of the wearer’s wrist and wraps around slightly on both the left and right side of the forearm.

I think flowers have always been a popular thing for people to get tattooed. Men, as well as women, get flowers tattooed.

Earlier this month I offered specials on orchid tattoos. I had two smart Ladies take me up on this offer.

The first of these girls chose to put a branch of magenta orchids on her calf. Now, in my opinion, the calf is a great place to get tattooed. It’s easy for the wearer to keep hidden from the eye of the public, and just as easy to reveal to the world for all to see!

This is what I created for her:

I used the curving line of the branch to snake up her leg, following the muscle. Then, I doppeled  the background with some varying shades of blue, to help make the flowers pop off her leg!

It is my pleasure to introduce to you, Mr. Mouse. Behold, the cuteness! As he crawls up his mountain of cheese he makes his way into the heart of all who see him.

Lately, I’ve had people asking to see process photos of the art I create. In this blog, I have decided to do just that.

When I decide to create a work of art, first I must choose what to draw, of course. In this case I wanted to draw a super cute mouse, so I took some time to look at pictures of mice to get inspiration. Then I set to drawing a rough draft, which you can see here, drawn in red pencil.

From the rough draft, I moved on to doing the final line drawing on a nice piece of Bristol paper with Microns. At this point I settled on a color scheme and got to work  coloring in my new creation with Prismacolor pencils.

I began my coloring with the browns, oranges, and yellows of the cheese. Then moved my  way   through the soft grays of Mr. Mouse. I love the soft grays I put in Mr. Mouse, but I also wanted him to have a splash of color. This is what made me give him those big ol’ baby blues and his pink ears, toes, nose, and tail! Oh and I can’t forget his big yellow chompers!

To finish off this mini masterpiece  I chose a background to accentuate the colors of the cheesy mountain and Mr. Mouse himself. The color scheme I went with is a fade from a violet blue to a light sky blue.

There you have it, Folks. This is a brief description of what I go through when I create a miniature masterpiece.

It’s always fun to tattoo these things realistically, but I also love using my imagination!

I got to do just that with this little fishy tattoo. It’s on the top of a girl’s foot. Which, by the way, is my favorite spot on the body to tattoo!

This lil hooter is a piece I drew up for a tattoo contest I held last December.

I believe I’m going to turn it into a painting and possibly even a series of paintings which would involve more animals with huge eyes. The cuteness is almost too much to handle!!!!!!!!!

I’m thinking, maybe I’ll draw a fox with a huge fluffy tail and a slow- lorris!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, I think the cute is going to kill me!
