It’s very common for people to get a tattoo which honors a member of their family. I always love doing these because I know how much they mean to my clients.
Not too long ago I got a walk in who wanted something special for her dad. She said she wanted a deer head with a banner and some leaf or flowery things around it. She said she also wanted the style to be a bit traditional.
I loved her idea, so I jumped right on it! This is what I drew up for her originally.
She liked what I drew but wanted to see something a bit more “swirly” and “girly” added to it, while still keeping a leaf-type image involved. I did a quick re-draw for her and she loved the little changes I made.
Over the years I have realized that some people can be a bit nervous to ask their artists to make changes to a drawing. This is not something to be afraid about, though. As long as the changes are reasonable, ask! You will be much happier with your tattoo. The changes I made to this girl’s tattoo took it from a piece she really liked to something she loved.
In the end this client got a beautiful, traditional-inspired tattoo dedicated to her daddy. This is what I created for her.
